Today's job is strawing the rhubarb. The straw forms a mulch which warms the ground, supresses weeds, reduces water loss (later in the season!) and 'draws' the rhubarb by reducing the light getting to the shoots. Hopefully it won't be too long until we are picking the first stalks.
Flower sprouts, that don't taste like sprouts !!! indescribably nice and tender. Steamed, they make a nice base for cheesy scrambled egg for a quick lunch.
Kale has been a superstar for us in the last year. It's the one vegetable that has kept giving through drought and cold and here is the next batch underway in our extra insulated polytunnel. We finally got around to trying it as a raw salad at Christmas. Slice it into fine shreds and then massage with an oily dressing of your choice. The 'red russian' variety is selling particularly well at the moment, it develops more red colour when it is colder.
